Geographic location

  Yuyao is located in eastern part of Zhejiang province on the southern bank of the Yangtze River Delta (at longitude 120¡ã25 east, and latitude 20¡ã, 40¡ã¡éto 30¡ã, 23¡ã¡é north). It is within the Shanghai Economic Zone. It is 40 kilometers west of the international port city of Ningbo, 120 kilometers west of Hangzhou. It arrives at Hangzhou Bay in the north and Siming Mountains in the south. About 830,000 people are living in 22 (townships) in an area of 1,527 square kilometers.
¡¡¡¡With a subtropical monsoon climate, Yuyao has distinctive four seasons and sufficient sunshine. It blows southeast wind during most time of the year. Yuyao has an average annual temperature of 16.2 ¡æ, hours of sunshine and average 1,300 millimeters of precipitation a year. It has an annual humidity of 80% and a frost-free period of 240 days.
¡¡¡¡Yuyao became a county in Qin Dynasty, a long history and splendid culture ahs earned it such prestige as ¡°a celebrated place of outstanding personages and cultural legacies¡± and ¡°the most country in the southeast¡±. It has been a famous town of history and culture in Zhejiang province. It has been renowned as a land of wisdom and the birthplace of Yan Ziling, a senior scholar in East Han Dynasty, Yu Xi, a famous writer in Jin Dynasty, Yu Shinan, a politician and calligrapher in Tang Dynasty, Wang Yangming, a philosopher and educator in Ming dynasty, Zhu Shunshui, a culture exchange envoy between China and Japan, and Huang Zongxi, a statesman and writer during late Ming Dynasty, and early Qing Dynasty, and others. These people contributed to Yuyao¡¯s famous saying that ¡°Natives along the Yaojiang River are he most distinguished in the country¡±. The discovery of ¡°Cultural Ruins of Hemudu¡±, which dated back 7,000 years, made Yuyao one of the birthplaces of the Chinese people.

¡¡¡¡In 1984, Yuyao was approved as one of the first coastal areas opening to the outside world; and in 1985, Yuyao became a city; and in 1995, it was approved by the State Council to become a Class two city.

¡¡¡¡Since the adopting of the reform and opening policy, Yuyao has witnessed rapid growth of economy and different social sectors, and remarkable achievements have been made since then. The sustained fast-speed growth of its economy has enabled the significant improvement of its comprehensive power and constant benefit of peoples'life. The fundamental role of the agriculture has further been consolidated, and the rural economy has kept growing in every aspect. The agriculture industry has arrived at a certain size with vegetable, tea, livestock and poultry, aquatic products, bamboo shoot and fruits as the mainstay sectors. Industry, as the largest sector of the economy, has also sustained fast-speed growth to establish complete and complementing sectors including plastics, mold-making, textiles, clothing, electronics, electrical home appliances, instruments, chemical, refining, food, toys, arts and crafts. Lighters, buttons and heating products made in Yuyao are very competitive. Stable growth of the service industry has resulted in booming growth and growing strength of commerce, information technology and tourism. Prosperous and dynamic rural and urban markets and abundant supply of consumer goods have helped the improvement of life quality of the residents.
¡¡¡¡The city has built a brand new economic mix based on agriculture, pillared on industry and piloted by export production, which enabled the economy to grow at an annual average rate of 25%. In 1998, the gross domestic product of the city arrived at 12.20 billion yuan, and the gross output value of industry and agriculture reached 42.15 billion yuan, which helped Yuyao to become one of the top 50 among more than 2,100 counties (cities) in the term of comprehensive economic power.
